Our Story

Quick Facts on Britton Lumber

• 1946: The company was founded in Hartland, Vermont.
• 1940’s, 50’s & 60’s: Operated both portable and stationary sawmills out of several locations including Hartland, Norwich, West Fairlee & Ely, Vermont.
• 1971: Built a permanent sawmill in Fairlee, Vermont which is now our headquarters and wholesale distribution yard.
• Early 70’s: Britton opened its wholesale building materials division.
• 2012: Acquired a distribution yard in Gray, Maine
• 2014: Moses family purchased the business from the Britton family.
• 2015: In March of this year, our Fairlee sawmill had a fire and was a total loss.
• 2016: In August of this year, the company acquired our Bath, New Hampshire manufacturing facility.
• 2026: Acquired our Billerica, Massachusetts distribution yard.
• We have approximately eighty employees company wide.

Wholesale Division

• Started in the early 1970s selling lumber and building materials to retailers in Vermont and New Hampshire.
• We currently serve over three hundred retail customers in seven northeast states.
• We service the crating and packaging industry along with shed builders, modular home manufacturers, and other similar companies.
• We offer a wide variety of lumber, roofing, outdoor living, insulation and other building material products.

Manufacturing Division

• Sawmill production is approximately 10 million board feet of Eastern White Pine (medium size mill by New England standards for Pine mills). The planermill processes around 11 million board feet a year.
• All production is sawn into 1″ boards, graded rough, kiln dried, planed & graded again to Northeastern Lumber Manufacturer’s Association specifications.
• Markets for our lumber include, retailers in New England, and wholesalers and secondary manufacturers throughout the country. Around 30% of our production goes outside New England.
• Products and uses include siding, paneling, shelving, trim, millwork, furniture, crafts, sheathing & crating.
• By-products from our manufacturing operation include bark (landscaping), chips (pulp & paper mills), sawdust (boiler fuel & cattle bedding) & shavings (horse & cattle bedding)
